Underwhelmed by Apple – again!

I really, really wanted something released today that made me think, “I’ve just gotta buy that”. Instead, I don’t see a single thing of any realistic interest to me. This is very self-indulgent, I realise…

Apple has been losing me a bit in recent years. I used to sing their praises to everyone and advise and help people to switch. Now that they have momentum they are using their market muscle to the benefit of their shareholders. Meanwhile, users in some countries have been marginalised. This morning’s keynote was clear evidence of this.

Movies and iPhones. But not for us in the arse end of the world.

And no iPhone 3G announcement as networks in USA are not ready yet.

The AirBook is a gorgeous laptop and has the “wow” factor but little substance for those who don’t need an “ultra portable” laptop.

10.5.2 would have been good to see to fix the bugs that are still around.

And a piece of very nice but expensive hardware that promises to do what had previously been very clearly promised as an included feature in Leopard. A feature that simply does not work in Leopard. Suddenly, it’s presented to us as a $700 AUD add on. Not good.

That’s not what I expected from Apple five years ago, but it’s becoming something of an emerging pattern in their business strategy.

About to order a new iPod 160GB…

As I can’t seem to get polls working, I’ll have to do this the old fashioned way:

What should I engrave on the new aPod? My iPods are all called the aPod – you work it out!

  • The aPod Mk II
  • The aPod Classic
  • The aPod Grandpa
  • The Pappa aPod
  • Nothing – it lessens the value for resale

C’mon, Apple

So the iPod is renamed the iPod Classic with an 80GB and 160GB model.

And the iPod Touch is released – what a perfect iPod, except for the mere 16GB storage space… not enough to even store a fart on…

Introducing the most spectacular Porche ever created, capable of only 16km/h…

I’m overwhelmed by how useless the potential of the iPod Touch is with the storage space it has.

I’ve ordered the 160GB Classic!

New Apple offerings

I’m going to talk about this on a podcast very soon, but just thought I’d put it out there.

Not too sure about the new keyboards. Not as ‘solid’ looking as the previous white keyboard – and for someone who’s on the keyboard all day, not too sure.

Also not too sure about the new iMacs either. Just seem to be a refresh instead of something new.

Mmmmmm.

Apple meant innovation, but not this time round.

I’m excited!

I’ve just ordered my new laptop.

15 inches, 2.33GHz, 160GB hardrive of MacBook Pro goodness.

It should be with me in 8-10 days.

I can’t wait!

What should I name it?

If Apple released Leopard like Windows released Vista…

Do you think we’d end up with something like this:

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Basic
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Premium
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Ultimate
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Ultimate Platinum
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Ultimate Platinum Black
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Basic
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Premium
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Ultimate
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Ultimate Platinum White
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Ultimate Platinum Black
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Ultimate Platinum Alloy
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Home Business Professional Ultimate Platinum Alloy with extra Steveness

Personally, I’d like the extra Steveness!

MacWorld 2007

Not really impressed with the Keynote by the iGod, Saint Steve.

The iPhone won’t be available in Asia/Australia until next year and it’s not 3G. Australia is moving completely over to 3G, so ’2.5G’ isn’t an option. And the Nokia N93 basically does all that the iPhone does. And it’s available now.

Apple TV can already be done in other ways, so that’s not really exciting for me.

Desperately wanting software updates and what’s happening with the iSight?

Don’t get me wrong, I love Apple/Macs as you know, but I’m thinking it could have been a whole lot more.

My 2 cents worth anyway.
